When Broadway Bound Sings Karaoke announced their 2026 contest, Sage, Paige, and Lucinda knew right away they wanted to perform "When I Grow Up" from _Matilda the Musical_. It's a song that means a lot to all three of them — and it turned into a much bigger project than any of us expected.

## Picking the Song (and a Problem)

Once they settled on "When I Grow Up," the next step was finding sheet music with harmonies. That turned out to be the first real hurdle. The only versions we could find that included harmonies were arranged for choir — and those required buying **30 licenses**, since they're sold per singer. For a trio, that just didn't make sense.

So Sage did it herself: she sat down and wrote her own harmony arrangement for the three of them. She listened, experimented, and built parts that fit thethe song and made it feel like more than just three singers.

## Filming the Video

With the arrangement done, the three of them rehearsed and then filmed their entry video together. They used a shared note on their phones to plan out all the scenes and then make a list of what needed to be filmed where to make the half day they had together fit all the scenes they needed to get recorded.

## 🏆 1st Place!

The video took **1st place** in the online contest. As one of the top 6 finishers, they were invited to perform live at the **Broadway Bound Sings Karaoke live showcase**.

## Re-Arranging for the Live Show

There was just one catch: Lucinda wasn't available for the live performance. That meant Sage had to go back and rework the parts and her harmony arrangement for just two voices — keeping the spirit of the trio version but making it land with only Sage and Paige on stage.

## Looking Back

The whole project — picking a song, writing original harmonies, filming, winning, re-arranging, and performing live — turned into a great lesson in problem solving and collaboration. Huge thanks to Lucinda for being part of the video, to Broadway Bound Sings Karaoke for putting on the contest and showcase, and to everyone who voted and cheered us on. 🎤


Karaoke Contest 2026: When I Grow Up

If you've been following Fitz's adventures, you might be wondering about his sister. Let me introduce you to Biana - Fitz's litter-mate and a cat with quite the origin story.

## A Dramatic Beginning

Fitz and Biana weren't born into easy circumstances. Their mom was a pregnant cat found alone in an abandoned apartment. Somehow, she survived in that empty space with nothing but access to water from an open toilet. To this day, no one knows what she found to eat during that time, but she made it through and gave birth to three kittens: Fitz, Biana, and one more sibling.

A friend of ours ended up adopting their mom and the third sibling, so we still get to hear updates about them. It's nice knowing the family stayed somewhat connected, even if separated.

## The Name Game

I named both Fitz and Biana after characters from the Keeper of the Lost Cities books. If you know the series, you know these characters are pretty awesome, and it felt right for these two survivors. Fitz in the books is confident and loyal, while Biana is fierce and underestimated - kind of fitting for our cats, actually.

## Two Very Different Personalities

While Fitz is bold and curious (as you've seen from his bearded dragon friendship), Biana is... let's say more cautious. Where Fitz will march right up to investigate something new, Biana watches from a safe distance first. She's skeptical of changes, wary of strangers, and generally takes her time warming up to new situations.

But once she trusts you? She's just as loving as her brother, maybe even more so because you know you've earned it.

## Sibling Bond

Despite their different approaches to life, Fitz and Biana have a special bond. They'll chase each other around the house, groom each other (when they feel like it), and sometimes curl up together for naps. They communicate in that silent sibling way - a look, a tail flick, and they know what the other is thinking.

It's pretty cool having two cats who grew up together from day one. They have a connection that's different from just being housemates.

## Looking Ahead

Biana might not be as bold as Fitz in her adventures, but she's got her own charm. Stay tuned for more stories about both of them - I have a feeling Biana will surprise us all eventually.

When we first got our bearded dragon, we weren't sure how Fitz would react. Cats are natural hunters, after all, and a lizard basking under a heat lamp seemed like it might be too tempting. But Fitz has surprised us in the best way possible.

## The First Meeting

The first time Fitz saw the bearded dragon, he approached the tank with his usual curious intensity - ears forward, eyes wide, tail twitching. But instead of going into hunt mode, something different happened. He sat down and just... watched.

## An Unexpected Bond

Now, whenever the bearded dragon is out of the tank (supervised, of course!), Fitz comes over to check things out. He's incredibly gentle, sniffing carefully and keeping his claws retracted. Sometimes the dragon will tell Fitz to back up but other times he'll let Fitz come close and nose bump him - a couple times Fitz has gotten a dragon tongue on his nose and he does not seem to like that!

## The Photo

The photo above captures one of their hangouts perfectly. Fitz has this look of mild confusion but also acceptance, like "Yeah, I guess we're friends now." The bearded dragon is just vibing.

Who knew a cat and a lizard could be buddies? Fitz likes him more than he likes Fitz, but its working. Stay tuned for more adventures!
