Karaoke Contest 2026: When I Grow Up

When Broadway Bound Sings Karaoke announced their 2026 contest, Sage, Paige, and Lucinda knew right away they wanted to perform "When I Grow Up" from Matilda the Musical. It's a song that means a lot to all three of them — and it turned into a much bigger project than any of us expected.

Picking the Song (and a Problem)

Once they settled on "When I Grow Up," the next step was finding sheet music with harmonies. That turned out to be the first real hurdle. The only versions we could find that included harmonies were arranged for choir — and those required buying 30 licenses, since they're sold per singer. For a trio, that just didn't make sense.

So Sage did it herself: she sat down and wrote her own harmony arrangement for the three of them. She listened, experimented, and built parts that fit thethe song and made it feel like more than just three singers.

Filming the Video

With the arrangement done, the three of them rehearsed and then filmed their entry video together. They used a shared note on their phones to plan out all the scenes and then make a list of what needed to be filmed where to make the half day they had together fit all the scenes they needed to get recorded.

🏆 1st Place!

The video took 1st place in the online contest. As one of the top 6 finishers, they were invited to perform live at the Broadway Bound Sings Karaoke live showcase.

Re-Arranging for the Live Show

There was just one catch: Lucinda wasn't available for the live performance. That meant Sage had to go back and rework the parts and her harmony arrangement for just two voices — keeping the spirit of the trio version but making it land with only Sage and Paige on stage.

Looking Back

The whole project — picking a song, writing original harmonies, filming, winning, re-arranging, and performing live — turned into a great lesson in problem solving and collaboration.
